Have You Thought About Volunteering?
A message from Sally Willis, chair of the Volunteer Committee
I grew up in a small town in southern Virginia. It was the kind of place where everyone looked after each other. My father was a doctor who, after a full day at the office, spent many evenings making house calls to sharecroppers out in the county. They didn't have cars, and so couldn't bring their family into town for medical attention or delivery of their babies.
My mother contributed to the community in many ways, including cub scouts, church-related activities, driving people to the distant hospital for cancer treatments, and warming everyone’s hearts with her fun-loving nature. When she died at a young age, for weeks countless people brought over fried chicken, meatloaf, casseroles and other meals, and sent lovely notes expressing how much they had appreciated her.
These are just a few examples of my experiences of growing up in a real, caring community.
Immediately upon retiring, I joined the Village and signed up to be a volunteer. In the 47 years I have lived in Washington, I never felt that I was part of a community until I joined the Village. Now I run into people I know on the sidewalk or at the grocery store and have become friends with people I see regularly at Village-sponsored activities. I am so thankful for this.
Volunteering for the Village has enabled me both to meet interesting people and to extend kindness to others.
As your new Volunteer Committee chair, my hope is that if I and others "pay it forward" in kindness today, we can help create a Village-wide culture that will motivate others, to provide kindness when we need it in the future.
I invite you to experience the satisfaction that volunteering brings to your life. The Village is particularly in need of volunteers who can drive members to medical and other appointments. We also need volunteers to provide a wide range of non-driver services.
