Tales of Two Americas“Tales of Two Americas: Stories of Inequality in a Divided Nation,” edited by John Freeman is our next Book Club selection.

In this newly published collection of essays, life in a deeply divided America is examined by 36 major contemporary writers, including Anthony Doerr, Ann Patchett, Roxane Gay, Rebecca Solnit, Hector Tobar, Joyce Carol Oates, Edwidge Danticat, Richard Russo, and Eula Bliss.
The discussion will be moderated by Villager Anders Gyllenhaal, a journalist and editor who served on the Pulitzer Prize Board for nine years.

Kirkus Reviews writes that the book’s editor, John Freeman, founder of the eponymous literary biannual, expands on a previous anthology regarding New York City’s inequality. “This is not just an urban problem,” Freeman writes. “In smaller cities and towns and in rural America the gulf between the haves and have-nots stretches just as wide, even if its symptoms are not so visible.”

While these parameters seem broad, Freeman’s mandate is fulfilled by the uniformly high quality of the contributors.

Cost: Free, but participants are responsible for obtaining the book. It is available at the library, and is out in audio format.
