What is this?
The United States is now 2 years into the Covid epidemic and a new omicron variant is testing the nation’s health, public health, and economic systems. The basic public health tools (social distancing, mask wearing, quarantine, PCR testing) are still in vogue. New weapons have been added (vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, antiviral medications, rapid home tests) have been added to the toolbox for treatment and prevention.
And yet the past two months have brought a record number of infections and a surge in cases that have overwhelmed many hospitals and businesses who have a shortage of workers out sick with the virus.
Science, politics, government inefficiencies, and the public’s tolerance for the pandemic constraints are playing a role in the current surge. Public health recommendations are likely to change.
