FBWEV Walks the Great Outdoors
On May 21, a dozen Villagers visited the unique urban arboretum and gardens encompassing the entire 84-acre campus of American University. With AU’s landscape architect and arborist as guides, the seniors learned how the University is creating not only beautiful outdoor spaces, but also fostering a sustainable urban environment with rain gardens, drought tolerant plants, and other “green” techniques, revisiting the original 1890’s landscape design of Frederick Law Olmsted. And what a delightful surprise to see the newest garden near the Economics Department, a gift from Sue Headlee, FBWE Villager, upon completion of 37 years of AU life as a teacher and student. With so much to see as the seasons change, all agreed another visit was a must!
