Even though FBWEV at six months is in its infancy compared to some other Villages in the DC area, FBWE Villagers already feel a broader sense of community while enjoying a variety of individual programs and services. There are now 116 residents of Foggy Bottom West End who are members bringing our Village to life, with the help of volunteers, donors, and other community supporters.
Our members are thriving with the wonderful support and daily guidance of Bob McDonald, our Executive Director. For members who may need a ride to a medical appointment, groceries purchased and delivered, technological dilemmas resolved, or a respite from caregiving, Bob is there to coordinate a volunteer response.
Members are also having fun and learning new things from the programs and activities offered these past few months, which have been varied and informative. Plus members have started a number of groups with special shared interests — e.g. walking, dining out, music, and more. In March we started an ongoing wellness series and in April members can begin taking balance classes. Our goal is to enhance the lives of our members and we are continually seeking to add value and meaning to Village membership.
Here’s what Villagers are saying:
Want you to know how effective and helpful [the volunteer] was . This first experience with a Village volunteer was such a success, thanks to your choice and [the volunteer’s] expertise.
I could not have survived these last… months without the Village… to lighten my load.
The Lunch Bunch has been a great success…. With great company, good conversation and wonderful food it is something to look forward each month!
In Spring 2014, you will be hearing about some additional member amenities as well as new opportunities to share your experiences as a Villager. In fact, in fall 2014, DC area Villages will be welcoming Villagers from around the country to attend our annual national conference. The Washington Metro area has the greatest concentration of Villages — area residents are enthusiastic and appreciate the difference a Village can make both to individuals and their communities. As one Villager noted, “Whoever came up with this brilliant idea, I owe a lot to.”
Being a member is more than just being a part of a group. It’s an experience. Join us. FBWEV will enhance your life.
