Village Particpates in the DC Office on Aging Block-by-Block Walk
Published on 4/9/2014
As part of the Age Friendly DC Office’s Block-by-Block Walk, The Village Executive Director, Bob McDonald, led a team that observed and recorded the conditions of the blocks in ANC 2A.
In particular, they looked for cracked, uneven, brick-missing, and loose sidewalks; sidewalks that are not wide enough for two people or a wheelchair to manage; damaged street lights; curb cuts that were not textured for the visually impaired; pedestrian crossing countdown signs that did not give enough time to cross the street safely; cars that went through yellow lights or did not stop completely at stop signs; bicyclists that rode on sidewalks; the number of trash cans, benches, and mailboxes in the neighborhood.
In addition, they checked out the accessibility of convenience stores and markets and the prices on various food staples in these stores. The team also noted the number of police that they saw during the 1.5 hour walk.
The report goes into the city where it will be collated with the reports of the more than 300 Single Member Districts and from there, an action plan will be drawn up to address the issues that surface.
