DC’s own American University’s Arboretum and Gardens encompasses the entire 84-acre campus with more than 2,500 trees - over 130 species and varieties. On April 19th FBWEV members learned that beneath this canopy thrives a layered understory of shrubs, ornamental grasses, and seasonal plantings.
The tour included the garden that Village member Sue Headlee endowed as a gift to the Economics Department of American University. The garden has been awarded the highest distinction from the Landscape Contractors Association: the Grand Award for Landscape Design and a plaque was presented during the reception. Members were honored to be included in the ceremony and acknowledged Sue’s foresight in endowing such a wonderful gift.
