Tour of Brumidi Corridor Restoration, US Capitol

Published on 8/23/2016
In this salon, Christiana Cunningham-Adams, a fine art conservator, will take participants on a personal tour of the restoration work on the historic Brumidi Corridors in the US Capitol. No food or beverage will be provided with this salon.
The ornate paintings on the walls and ceilings of the Brumidi Corridors, one of the most beautiful features of the Capitol, were designed by Constantino Brumidi between 1857 and 1859. Following careful study, the walls of the corridors are being restored to their original colors and details under her direction. No two panels are exactly alike, and new details and delicate colors are coming to light as the murky overpaint is removed.
Cunningham-Adams is an independent fine art paintings conservator who has lent her expertise in fresco conservation to the US Capitol for two decades. After studying art history in Rome, she completed an Advanced Painting Conservation internship at Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum. A fellow of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, Cunningham-Adams was the recipient of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Award in 2004. In 1996, she directed the restoration of the two side panels of the Lincoln Memorial.
